Introduction to Numerical Optimization. In all branches of science, engineering and economics it is required to estimate certain quantities so that the system, device or plan not only meets a required set of specifications but is also the best in terms of certain figure of merit generally called the goodness factor of a design.

This course is suitable for those who are familiar with the C language. It is a prerequisite to a further advanced course in C++ or for programming in Microsoft Windows.

Some of the virtues of optimizer EVOP are the ability to deal with objective functions having a mix of continuous, discrete and integer variables as arguments. No requirement for scaling of objective and constraining functions. Capability for optimization even when there are more than one of the above difficulties are simultaneously present.

Understanding Optimization

In traditional systems design the objective is merely to meet the specifications. There is no formal attempt to reach the best design in the strict mathematical sense of minimizing cost or weight or volume or maximizing profit.

The science of optimization is a formalism that allows not only all specifications (design constraints) to be met, but would also yield design which is the best in terms of some figure(s) of merit.
